Should You Become a Corporate Wellness Expert?

November 2, 2015

If you’re thinking about becoming a corporate wellness expert, there are some questions you should ask before beginning this journey. This career isn’t for everyone and it takes a lot of time and dedication. Look at these important questions to see if becoming a corporate wellness expert is truly the right path for you.

Are You Willing to Meet Educational Requirements?

Before choosing this path, you must consider if the educational requirements are even something worth your time. Does a health related degree seem like something you want to pursue? In order to become a corporate wellness expert, many companies insist you have a degree in a health-related field and/or the equivalent years’ worth of experience. If you do not have the schooling required, are you willing to complete it?

Do You Have an Intimate Knowledge of Business?

Not only do most companies want someone with a health related degree, but also someone who understands the basics of business. Corporate wellness experts must be able to understand the basic functions of accounting and finance, along with a strong understanding of:

  • Marketing
  • Public speaking
  • Customer service

That way, you are not unfamiliar with the business culture and will be able to understand the inner workings of the business you are consulting. The corporate landscape is always changing and you must know what those changes mean and how to adapt to them.

Do You Have Good Customer Service Skills?

Corporate wellness experts need to interact with their clients on a daily basis. They must be able to clearly explain information accurately so that companies and their employees can understand, as well as meet their needs. If there comes a time when you have a difficult client, you must be able to calmly and professionally handle them.

What’s Your Personality Type?

Your personality is not the deciding factor of whether or not this field is right for you, but it plays an important role. The ideal personality type for this type of career is someone with:

  • High energy
  • Great social skills
  • The ability to handle stress

With these attributes, you can easily bond and communicate with your clients. This career path is not for you if you prefer not to talk to people.

Do You Practice What You Preach?

Physical fitness must be a major part of your life in order for you to be successful as a corporate wellness expert. Take a look at your own personal fitness and health. Do you meet the requirements and goals of what you would supply to your clients? Someone who teaches fitness is not going to be well-received if they themselves do not take their own advice.
