Home Fitness Equipment Helps Build Mental & Physical Strength

Cardiovascular exercises can be accomplished anywhere and at any time with the help of home fitness equipment such as TRUE treadmills, TRUE ellipticals, and TRUE stationary bikes.  These home fitness equipment pieces have been adapted to now include different programs that allow each person to personalize their workout so that they can exercise the way they desire.  Completing workouts on the elliptical, treadmill, and stationary bike can be difficult on the legs and the lower body, which is why it is important to remember to also find different ways to work and strengthen the upper body.  Strengthening the upper body can be accomplished on machines like the elliptical, ones that incorporate the arms while it moves the legs, or by lifting weights and doing other standard strength training exercises.  Regardless of the equipment being used to strengthen the upper and lower bodies, as long as the heart rate is raised and physical exertion is required; your body is getting a workout and thus becoming stronger, happier and ultimately much healthier.

Exercise is important to your health for many reasons; not only does it keep you in physical shape, but it enhances and strengthens your mental aptitudes as well.  There are many different ways to stay in physical shape, but the key is to remain active by doing activities that you enjoy and that best strengthen the parts of your body that need to be stronger.  By participating in activities that you enjoy you will be more motivated to work hard and you will be happier as you work out.  The benefits of working out are endless, and it turns out that sometimes the most difficult part is finding the right workouts and the correct home fitness equipment to use, to ensure complete happiness and enjoyment in your workouts.

The act of exercising also triggers the release of endorphins, which create a sense or a feeling of happiness.   These endorphins help naturally maintain good moods as well as mental health.  Maintaining mental health is in many ways just as important as physical health, and it is finding the balance of both that is the ultimate goal.

How to Maximize Your Treadmill Workout

How to Maximize Your Treadmill Workout

Whether you are just a beginner or a pro runner, it is easy to get in a rut and not see any progress with this workout.  It is important to be able to take advantage of all of the benefits of running by making sure you’re not stuck on “cruise control”.  Here are some tips to maximize your treadmill workout.

One common misconception about running is that staying at a constant pace for a long distance is the best workout.  The truth is this eliminates many of the benefits of using a treadmill.  It is important to remember to change up your cardio workout.  On a TRUE treadmill there are multiple programs to help you do this.  There are options to choose from that include running intervals where you can choose the workout time and work load, while the machine customizes a set of speed intervals to maximize your workout.  This switches up your normal routine while also burning more calories, getting you in better shape, and making you faster.

Another great way to not only burn calories, but also to tone your muscles is to change the incline of your treadmill.  Going uphill and downhill while using the treadmill helps to tone many lower body muscles including your glutes, thighs, and calves, and also helps to strengthen your core.  TRUE Treadmills have hill interval programs that help you customize a workout that changes the incline or decline at different times during your workout.  This is just another way to change up your typical workout routine while also boosting the advantages you take out of it.

Although increasing your speed and changing up your technique are all great ways to get in to shape, endurance is just as vital.  You should keep in mind that doing these treadmill workouts for twenty minutes every day is a good workout but you should push yourself by increasing the length of your run.  Adding five minutes every week to these workouts will completely change the results you get.

Staying in the Game: Hip Switch

By Dana Sullivan

Playing after hip replacement.

A generation ago, hip-replacement surgery meant you had one foot in the . . . well, let’s just say it probably wasn’t at the baseline. But that’s changed. Jimmy Connors had a hip replaced in 2005 after being plagued by back, leg and hip pain and was reportedly back on court six weeks later. And the procedure isn’t just for former pros. Frank Trulaske, 61, CEO of True Fitness Technology in St. Louis, was an avid runner and doubles player for 20 years, and at age 53 he began playing singles. Then his right hip started to bother him. He ignored his pain for a couple of years—“It pretty much went away after I warmed up,” he says— and had physical therapy and cortisone injections. But when an MRI showed bone rubbing on bone, his doctor told him that a joint replacement was on the horizon.

Trulaske had a total hip replacement in 2008. Though he won’t blame his high-impact activities, it’s likely they played a role. Even though the hips are among the body’s largest joints, they’re still vulnerable to wear and tear. The most common cause of chronic hip pain is osteoarthritis, which is largely hereditary. “Tennis players are at particular risk of hip problems because of the constant accelerating and decelerating,” explains Dr. Matthew L. Jimenez, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a clinical associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Hip-replacement surgery, which involves replacing both the ball and socket, used to be the last resort. But advances in technology have made it more common. It’s less invasive, and the ball of the implant is larger and sturdier.

Recovery is also less intense. Depending on your fitness and dedication to rehab, you might be playing within a few months. Trulaske says he was “just hitting” three weeks after surgery. “Those first couple of times I felt OK moving side to side, but moving forward . . . my muscles weren’t ready for that,” he says. It took nine months for him to feel “normal.” Today he has no pain. “I can really bend and move and don’t favor my bad hip anymore,” Trulaske says. “I’m competing against guys who are 15 years younger than I am.”

TRUE Fitness Workouts Provide Strength Training for the Heart

Living a long and healthy life is more than just luck of the draw. More and more people are turning to heart rate training to get their body’s most crucial muscle in shape.

Working out with a heart rate monitor is the best way to measure exercise stress on the body and build a stronger, healthier heart. By altering workout intensity based on target heart rate, a consistent stress level can be achieved which prevents under- or over-training.

“To get an optimum workout it is important to pace yourself,” said Bob Starr, TRUE Fitness Product Manager. “You want your heart rate at the proper level for an extended period of time. If your heart rate gets too high your activity can become counterproductive, if it is too low you are not getting any substantial health benefits.”

When people over-train, they have a tendency to become “burned out” quickly and quit their workout routine. Over-training can also lead to injury, especially in older adults, and can actually reduce conditioning – the opposite effect most people want.

By under-training the user runs the risk of not burning the amount of calories needed for the workout to be productive. For runners, it simply doesn’t allow them to hit the fitness goals needed to compete at any given level.

One of the benefits of a heart rate training regimen is consistency; something that should be desired in all workouts. With TRUE’s Heart Rate Control (HRC®) System, users always stay within a few beats of their target heart rate while working out on the equipment. TRUE treadmills have patented the ability to automatically adjust both speed and grade to maintain that target heart rate – setting TRUE equipment apart from the competition.

If users don’t feel like finding that target heart rate on their own, TRUE treadmills feature the Cruise Control button. Simply press the button when a stress level that feels right is attained and the machine will do the rest, automatically adjusting to their selected heart rate. Cruise Control keeps runners comfortable and motivated throughout their workout.

It can be said exercising without heart rate monitoring is like driving a car without a speedometer. TRUE offers HRC workouts that are seamlessly integrated into the equipment to ensure the heart gets the exercise and strength training it needs.
